Once Upon a Plot Point: Using Fairy Tales and Myth to Enrich Your Storytelling
We’ve all felt stuck for ideas from time to time. Turning to old stories can add depth and meaning to our own. Whether you decide to retell an old tale from a different perspective or include allusions in an original story, fairy tale and myth can help writers with world-building and archetypal characters and events you want to use to enrich your fiction, non-fiction, or poetry.
Chris Guppy has been writing since the age of four, when she used crayon on her grandmother’s bedroom wall and got away with it. (Thank you, Grandma!) She earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Wilmington, and her poems and essays have appeared or are forthcoming in The Sun, Pergola Literary, Ruminate Magazine, Writers Resist, and Alligator Juniper. She lives in Northern Colorado with her husband, son, and two black cats.
In Ghosts of the Mall: Writing New Gothic Bygones, workshop participants will trade crumbling castles for deserted shopping centers, superimposing all the best parts of that delicious Gothic aesthetic onto our modern landscape, with plucky protagonists to match. Long gowns and lanterns optional, but not required! In this workshop, participants will learn how markers of the Gothic literary tradition can be found in our modern spaces, review passages from a few classic and newly published Gothic texts, and contribute to a lively discussion about how we writers can recharge that aesthetic for contemporary readers. We will brainstorm story topics during a multi-part generative writing activity, then try our hands at the “New Gothic,” with a focus on setting.
Rebecca Cuthbert is an award-winning author of dark poetry and feminist horror. Her stories and poems often explore the creeping dread of domestic spaces, destabilizing the familiar and rendering uncanny the commonplace details of everyday lives. General Critique Group
First Monday evenings at 4:30, bring 1500 words of your work in progress and we’ll sort through it, with helpful, constructive feedback. In-Person group meets 2x a month. Email director for dates. Relaxed and supportive group for all levels. Also serves as an Accountability meeting if you’ve got goals you’re working on.
Book Study
Currently we’re reading Mary Oliver’s “A Poetry Handbook”. Our book studies will be throughout the year, once a week meetings, with good discussion and a relaxed atmosphere.
Marketing Group
Join us on Friday for a discussion of current issues, trends, helpful advice, and guest speakers. All of it geared to help you feel good about marketing and selling your book.
Poetry Critique Group
Join us the 3rd Monday of the month at 4:30pm MST for reading, feedback, and discussion on the craft and art of poetry. Also serves as an Accountability meeting if you’ve got goals you’re working on.

Join us every third Tuesday to meet and chat with your fellow members. Check in on your current projects, pose questions or concerns, and catch up with your community.
